Lifetime Movies presents......... just kidding!
There are only two reasons why people would buy a movie such as this. And much as it often is the case in life during such polarizing circumstances, half of you will be sorely disappointed.
If you were looking for a psychological thriller with tight and intelligent writing that exposed the madness of a sexual serial killer, not only regarding his motives, but a detailed background of his childhood, his hangups and what drives him to kill, well this is probably not for you.
However, if you wanted repeated scenes of a deranged loner kidnapping innocent female victims all so he can drug their drink, strip them naked at knife point before unceremoniously cutting their throat, well hang onto your popcorn bowl ya weirdo because this is YOUR movie.
While no further review should be necessary, because I have already explained exactly what audience this film is meant for and why no one else will ever buy it. I pride myself on being thorough so here goes...
DIARY OF A SEX OFFENDER is the story of Michael Regardie, a troubled loner who spends his days painting pictures that are ten kinds of terrible, writing in his journal and raping/murdering hapless female victims. There are many motives why he may be doing this. Could it be his troubled childhood with a aunt who raised him while being a prostitute? Could it be the strange mute cloaked/black-armed figure that urges him on, encourages him to kill whenever he is alone with one of his victims? Or could it be the fact that much like Jim Carey in THE NUMBER 23 he is obsessed with a certain sequence of numbers and desperately wants to know, needs to know, the meaning of them?
All this postulation is pointless, meaningless. This film could have ended up being a strange love story as one of his victims actually "likes" him but it fails there. It could have been a thought provoking mental chess game, but the sequence of numbers is NEVER explained until after the movie, and it could have been a terror-infused horror movie but none of his victims put up much of a fight once he drugs them.
This movie exists solely to show the visuals of a man using a knife to undress his helpless female victims like some cosmic all-powerful zipper and then to crudely fondle their breasts until the knife comes out and death is depicted by a quick cut-to of blood running down her naked breasts. It's a not a film, it's a fetish video for people who are tired of spanking it to reenactments of sex crimes on America's Most Wanted and want something a little more raw.
| Yucko/Neato Factor: This one made me feel genuinely sick (this is a hard thing to do). Also one of the sex scenes with a bound victim included a brief depiction of actual oral sex making this the hardest "Unrated" video I saw in all of 2010. |
 |
| Production Values: All the young "innocent" victims had the dimensions and tattoos of soulless strippers. Also, the thing could have used some special effects to underline the appearance of the hooded specter which bedeviled Regardie. |
 |
| Realism: In real life, the FBI and state law enforcement would have shut down this strange cretinous loser within hours of his first kill. |
 |
| Value for Price: For $17.99 there is at least one aspect of this film that will not enrage your sensibilities. |
 |
| Plot: Something I call "antiplot": When movie's storyline makes no sense whatsoever and yet the disc plays on, continually insisting on developing important details that ultimately never mean a damn thing, it is the worst possible plot. Somehow, even worse than a film with no plot whatsoever such as compilation porn. I wish I could leave a negative number here, an integer or perhaps even a foot instead of finger here to depict how stinky this aspect of the film was. |
