Did I miss the article in
Variety heralding the arrival of
the good vampire/bad vampire genre? Well,
if this and SUNDOWN
are any indication of the quality control
going on, it'll thankfully be over before
it starts.
Three female doctoral researchers
(only one of whom seems to do any work)
arrive in Transylvania where they are preparing
papers on folklore. After finding the ruins
of an ancient castle that isn't mentioned
in the town's tourist literature (booga,
booga!), one of the chicks hurts her arm... and
having never seen a horror film in their
lives they decide to take a "shortcut
through the woods" in order to reach
town before sundown.
The rest of the flick is a
battle between the two vampire brothers
(one is good because he's part human) for
the neck of the short-haired brunette. Yawn... and
in case you were wondering, she has the
eyes of the good vampire's mother.
Since this is a Full
Moon Entertainment (sic) release, I
fully expect a sequel (please note that
I didn't use the word "anticipate").
In case you were wondering, the "subspecies"
of the title are Ragu: The Evil Vampire's
tiny, muscle-bound hench-things.
[Editor's Notes: Yes,
we were right -- there were actually several
sequels in the series, some of them actually
watchable! Go figure. Once the concept had
played itself out for these characters,
director Ted Nicolau and Charles band were
back with VAMPIRE
JOURNALS. PHANTASM
fans take note -- that's Angus "The
Tall Man" Scrimm in the bad wig as
King Vladislav.]
